What Is Chiropractic?

Doctors of chiropractic medicine (DCs) adjust the spine with easy, manual thrusts to return the spinal vertebrae to their normal positions. Sometimes, a chiropractor will also adjust the neck, arm, and leg joints.

Spinal adjustments may relieve a variety of ailments, including headaches, some types of migraines, menstrual cramps, allergies, asthma, stomach disorders, spastic colons, and arm, hand, and leg pain due to a neck or lower back dysfunction.

Some asthma and emphysema patients use chiropractic care to relieve tension in their chests. Current research is helping to determine if the manipulation of the neck helps the ears drain properly, thus alleviating otitis media - the ear infection that affects children.

The Gonstead Method

We utilize the Gonstead method of chiropractic care, which can provide you with a more precise and accurate chiropractic experience. This method presents significant advantages over the standard chiropractic experience.

Every structure needs a solid foundation. Even small shifts in this foundation can lead to a greater instability in the structure as a whole. When it comes to your body, this foundation is your pelvic girdle. When level and positioned well, your body is sitting on a solid base.

If there are any misalignments, the body as a whole becomes less stable. These misalignments put pressure on the discs between the vertebrae. The discs resemble pads consisting of a spongy substance surrounded by cartilage.

The misalignments cause these pads to be inflamed and protrude, a possible result of a few minor stresses or one larger stress source (such as an accident). This condition called a subluxation. The ability to identify and correct these misalignments is the core of the Gonstead method.

What Training Do Chiropractors Have?

Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. One needs a rigorous course of study to receive a degree of Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). All state licensing boards require 2 to 4 years of undergraduate education and the completion of a 4-year chiropractic college course.

Doctors of chiropractic are uniquely trained in structural health and are highly skilled in spinal manipulation.

When you visit a doctor of chiropractic, especially here at Fanno Creek Chiropractic, you'll know that your doctor is qualified to perform procedures skillfully and safely and that your chiropractor cares about your health and wellness.

Is Chiropractic Care the Right Choice?

A recent federal study by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research found that spinal manipulation was one of the preferred early treatments for low back pain. A doctor may refer you to a chiropractor or coordinate with a chiropractic practitioner to give you optimal care.

Today, many insurance companies cover chiropractic care, and hospitals are providing access and/or staff privileges to chiropractors.

What Happens During a Chiropractic Examination?

We'll take a medical history as well as conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations. We spend a great amount of time evaluating posture, examining the spine, and testing reflexes, joint motion, and muscle strength.

We often use X-rays and other diagnostic images to locate vertebral dysfunction and to rule out disorders such as tumors or fractures, which require the attention of other healthcare experts.
